Welcome Suspense & Children's Author & Educator Linda Kane!

Hello one and all! How are you today? I'm back and hope everyone is doing well and happy! It’s so great to be with all of you again. Welcome back to my writing blog page where I try to share whatever I think may interest you. Of course, by now you all know how very much I love promoting other authors. Today I interview another fellow writer. With me this time is Multi-Published author Linda Kane, as she discusses writing and her latest book, a Young Adult novel, Chilled to the Bones, which was released on October 3, 2016 from Krullstone Publishing.

Linda L. Kane is the author of the Black Madonna, Matty’s Adventures in Numberland, Icelandia, Katterina Ballerina, and Cowboy Jack and Buddy Save Santa. Her upcoming novels are the Dex and Dealer Mysteries, and Daisy Murphy Mystery. She lives with her husband and three dogs in California.

Welcome Linda! Thanks so much for joining us here. Shall we begin to learn more about you and your writing?

 Author Linda Kane.

SJ: Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Teacher. School Psychologist. Author. And Horses, too.

Linda: I’ve certainly led a diversified life, so many things attract, and excite me. I am now a retired School Psychologist, learning disability specialist, counselor, and teacher. This gives me time to explore new adventures; such as writing and riding horses.

SJ: How fascinating. I couldn’t help noticing that you have written a suspense novel as well as children’s books. That is quite a varied experience. Can you tell us a little bit of how the idea evolved for each one?

Linda: I enjoy mysteries, adventures, France, and the Knights Templar which evolved into The Black Madonna. I enjoyed my job as a school psychologist and although I’m not directly helping children with learning so I wrote books to help with self-esteem, difficulty in math, and creativity. I just released a new book, Chilled to the Bones for YA readers which is a thrilling adventure ride with a sequel coming soon.

SJ: Good for you, Linda. Now, please tell us about your suspense release, The Black Madonna. The blurb sounds utterly fascinating to read….

Linda: The Black Madonna is historical speculative history about the Cathars, a religious order that was far ahead of its time, women could be the leaders of their religion, and the Cathars did not take money from the rich or poor. The Cathars were supposedly given the Holy Grail for safe- keeping. A young professor is in a race to discover the lost secrets before The Order, a secret society within the Catholic Church destroys them.

SJ: Whoa, Linda! That is quite a plot to throw into a book. It certainly has intrigued me, and I just love your book cover. How extensive was your research for The Black Madonna? How much fact and fiction did you roll into this book?

Linda: I researched The Black Madonna over two years before I decided to write about what I had learned. So many documents were lost back then due to fires, weather, and different factions destroying documents. Some documents were found in 1945 at Nag Hammadi. This is when I began to conceive the idea of a woman flying to unknown parts to save precious documents at her own peril.

SJ: Do you miss teaching? Has teaching influenced your books in any way? If so, how?

Linda: I still teach four classes in writing and art, I do enjoy still being able to teach, it was a passion of mine. I would have to say that yes, wanting someone to take something they learned from my books that they have read, appeals to me. I guess will always want to impart something I’ve learned to someone else.

SJ: What do you love most about being a writer? Least?

Linda: I love getting into the heads of my characters, becoming that individual for just a little bit, become something outside myself. The thing I dislike the most is editing.

SJ:  What writer inspired you most and how?

Linda: I think that when I was growing up Agatha Christie was the author that most inspired me. She took me and my imagination to different parts of the world, with fascinating characters, and droplets of clues for me to solve her mystery story.

SJ: If you could give just one piece of important writing advice to an aspiring writer, what would it be?

Linda: Don’t wait for the’ best time’ to write, because there never really is, just write and create. Carry a notepad with you, observe people, their conversations, their body language, and never give up.

SJ: What is a favorite book you enjoyed reading and would recommend without hesitation? Why?

Linda: I enjoyed The Historian, it is well written. Every word, every phrase is carefully planned. It was a true pleasure to read.

SJ: Wonderful, Linda. Thanks to your visit here today, I now have to add three more books to my never-ending books to read. In closing, and without giving too much away, do you have any more projects in the immediate future? We’d love to hear about it.

Linda: I am working on a sequel to Chilled to the Bones about Witches, and I have begun to outline another speculative historical fiction book about the U. S. Indian Nation.

Thanks so much, Linda for participating. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you. Thank you so much for allowing us to take some time out of your busy schedule and interview you. Thank you all for stopping by. Readers, take note you may purchase a copy of Linda’s books through her publisher or at online retailers and independent booksellers.

But before we go, we can’t depart without sharing a bit of Linda’s books with you.

First, here is the synopsis for The Black Madonna, a book that I can’t wait to read:

As the 13th-century dawns, the Christian world is in a spiritual upheaval. In Rome, Pope Innocent III plots to crush a popular new heresy sweeping Europe. In the Holy Land, crusading monks make a shocking discovery about Jesus of Nazareth. In southern France, minstrels sing occult versus claiming salvation through the intercession of a worthy lady.

In the foothills of the French Pyrenees, a noble woman will defy the most powerful pontiff in history and escape the slaughter of the remaining Cathars at Montsegur and take with her an ancient artifact that could change the course of Christianity. One day, her ancestor, Luci de Foix discovers the little known but true account of one of the most fascinating women in history and goes on a heroic quest to discover a guarded secret- long hidden. Against overwhelming odds, Luci evokes the legendary defiance of the Jews against the Roman legions at Masada and escapes to finally bring to light the last spoken by Jesus.

And the synopsis for her latest release, Chilled to the Bones, another book that has piqued my interest:

"What's up, man?" Joe hollered. "Something in your way?" "Yeah, there's something in my way all right. I've uncovered a pile of bones." "Bones? What kind of bones?" "Bones, human bones with a skull." "Oh, my God!" the workers yelled in unison as they scrambled off their paint buckets and slid down the embankment of the hole Warren was peering into. "Should we move them?" Joe asked. "Well, I can't dig with them there," was all Warren could muster. Trevor picked up a long tree root and nudged the skull. It rolled over, and empty sockets stared back, vacant and weathered by time. The backhoe had cast the rest of the bones adrift in the dirt. They were a strange dirty tan color, and the hinges of the arms and legs were bulbous. He leaned down to investigate them more closely. Several hundred years and the right soil conditions for the fungus that had settled in the buried bones propagated a walking terror. Trevor was chosen as the new host for that terror. What was left of the other workers’ bodies was disposed of, and darkness fell.

And just in time for the Christmas holidays is Linda’s children’s book below, which was released last year. Cowboy Jack & Buddy Save Christmas:

An original Christmas story.

“A holiday adventure that will live on in your child's memory for years to come! For the first time that anyone can remember, Christmas is in trouble! Santa knows it and so do two young enterprising lads who live far away from the North Pole. Cowboy Jack, crime fighter and general whiz kid, collaborates with his ingenious cousin Buddy to help Santa save Christmas. This swashbuckling adventure gives each of us a glimpse into Santa's Toyland and concludes with a surprise way to save Christmas, an addition to Santa's team of reindeer, and a memorable Christmas tale! It's a story every child will want to read throughout the Christmas season and is sure to become a favorite for Christmas Eve! Beautiful Hardcover with Dust Jacket Edition!”

Do Reviews Really Reflect Your Writing? From BookDaily....Don't Despair. It May Not Be Your Writing.....

A note from SJ Francis:

I've had my shared of good and bad reviews for my debut novel, Shattered Lies, and I wholeheartedly agree with the post below. Some people just don't know how to write a review. They may be prejudiced toward your book's subject matter. They may just be having a bad day and they take it out on your book. I've had one reviewer think Shattered Lies was a mystery novel and when it wasn't, I was penalized for it. I have another reviewer state their love for the book but just gave three stars. I received another review that didn't like the homosexuality side storyline in Shattered Lies and based their entire review on that bias.
Received a bad review? Don't fret. Don't take it personal. Just move onward and upward onto your next project.
Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers!
S.J. Francis

Connecting Authors to Readers

Do Reviews Really Reflect Your Writing? | BookDaily #AuthorTips

Maybe It’s Not You

We’ve all been befuddled, disappointed, angry, and otherwise upset by some of the reviews we’ve received on Amazon or Goodreads. But before you let bad reviews undermine your confidence, consider the problem may be with the reviewer and not your work.

I received a 3-star review with the comment, “Good book. I really enjoyed …” The comment and the rating don’t match. A book so praised should warrant at least 4 stars.

I also received a 3-star rating without a comment. Yet the reader went on to buy the other four books in the series. Really? With all the books available, I certainly wouldn’t buy books I found to be mediocre. The man also gave the other titles 3 stars.

Some people who leave reviews or ratings have their own agenda or rating scale. I’ve learned to check what kind of ratings the reviewer gives to other books when I receive a 3-star rating or less to discern whether or not the rating is a reflection of my work or the reviewer. I usually find that my rating is the same as those given to most of the books reviewed.

I cringed at a 2-star rating but discovered that was the reviewer’s favorite rating. My first thought was that if he found books to be so uninspiring, perhaps he should be watching TV or movies. As I glanced down his list, however, I found titles of other 2-star books that I had read and liked very much. At least I was in good company. Then I wondered if he had confused and reversed the scale, thinking that 1 or 2 stars meant the better books.

My best example is a 1-star rating. I cried when I saw it. In checking the reviewer (click on their name), I found a statement that said she only liked to read historical fiction. That being the case, why would she elect to read a mystery and then slam it because it didn’t fit the genre she preferred?
Unfortunately, readers may not go to the trouble of checking reviewers, and we have to live with their ratings. I am not sure that Goodreads is a benefit to either the author or potential readers when reviewers can assign ratings, especially low ones, without justifying them. Low ratings hurt an author and can mislead readers.

That leads to the mystery of the amount of reviews or ratings we receive. Don’t be discouraged or interpret a lack of response as a reflection of your work. I get very few reviews. In the last week, I’ve received a handful of ratings on Goodreads and not one review on Amazon, but have sold almost 500 books. Please keep in mind that most of the titles that sold are part of a series. I can watch the numbers increase as readers work their way through the series. I am assuming here that most readers don’t continue to buy titles in a series unless they like the books.

A lack of reviews or low ratings certainly affects our rankings as they are part of Amazon’s algorithms, but don’t always interpret the lack as a valid comment on your writing or let it dishearten you. Enjoy the good reviews and keep writing.

A Guest Post by Multi-Published Author Tierney James...

Hello! Hello! And Hello! How are you all doing today? I'm back and hope everyone is doing well and happy! It’s so great to be with all of you again. Welcome back to my writing blog page where I try to share whatever I think may interest you. Of course, by now you all know how very much I love promoting other authors. Today I welcome back a fellow writer, but instead of the staid, standard interview, I’ve asked my guest to write a blog post. After all, aside from an interview, the best way to get to know an author is through their writing. And without further ado, let’s welcome back Multi-published author Tierney James, as she discusses writing and her latest book, Dance of the Devil’s Trill, which was released on July 14, 2016 from Black Opal Books.
                                                 Author Tierney James

As you may remember from her last visit here in June, Tierney has been in education for over thirty years. She recently stopped teaching World Geography for a nearby college to pursue her writing career. Creating a workshop for beginning writers, speaking at schools and serving as an officer in the writing group Sleuths’ Ink, are some of the work she does when not writing. With the creation of Winds of Deception, Tierney is working with one of the crew members of USS Liberty in hopes of obtaining the Medal of Honor for him. She is also working with Mission K9 Rescue to create a children’s book about four-footed soldiers that save lives.

Besides serving as a Solar System Ambassador for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and attending Space Camp for Educators, Tierney has traveled across the world. From the Great Wall of China to floating the Okavango Delta of Botswana, Africa, she ties her unique experiences into other writing projects such as the action thriller, An Unlikely Hero, the first in the Enigma Series. Winds of Deception is the second in that series. Living on a Native American reservation and in a mining town for many years fuels the kind of characters she never tires of creating.

Besides teaching and writing, Tierney enjoys family, gardening, reading and music. Other pursuits involve learning Hebrew in hopes of incorporating the knowledge in a future Enigma Series. She likes to research and sometimes that has involved learning new skills, such as being certified with various weapons.

She has settled in the beautiful Ozarks, but there’s never a dull moment in Tierney’s life. And that is just the way she likes it. "Life is an adventure! Embrace it," is her motto. You can find her on Facebook as Tierney James. Her website is http://www.tierneyjames.com

Welcome Tierney! Thanks so much for joining us here again. My goodness, lady, you are quite the prolific writer. You put so many of us to shame, but you also inspire. I know that you’ve inspired me and I thank you for it. So enough with me. Tierney, the floor, or my blog is now all yours.  Lead on, Tierney, and please tell us about your latest release. Everything you wish to tell us in your own words…..

Here’s the BLURB for Dance of The Devil’s Trill:

Catharina Spokane attempts to care for her ex-Marine brother who suffers from PTSD after returning home from war. No amount of pleading can convince him to stay off the streets among the other homeless vets. Between starting a new coffee business in a luxury hotel and dodging the insufferable owner, Damien Cruz, she volunteers at a soup kitchen for the undesirables of the city. When a stranger arrives to listen as she plays the violin for the forgotten, Catharina learns he is the one they call the Watcher. His mission is to protect the unfortunate souls of the street and the priest who guides them. Catharina finds herself drawn into a conspiracy of greed contrived by the city’s mayor and a dangerous love forbidden by God. The price forces her to choose between good and evil in a desperate act to save those she has endangered.

But how did Dance of the Devil’s Trill Come About?

An excellent question: Meet me in St. Louis – An Angel’s Inspiration

People continue to ask me, “Where do you get your stories?” It’s sometimes difficult to imagine your characters in the appropriate setting. My latest imaginary character spends his time hiding in the beautiful Union Station in St. Louis. Here an avenging angel helps the homeless and veterans with PTSD. He shouldn’t get involved in politics or fall in love, yet even angels can be tempted.

Above Photo Outside the Beautiful Union Station, St. Louis, Missouri.
The first time I stayed in this historic place I was bombarded with color and sound. Voices whispered on the first floor traveled up to my balcony, hinting at stories never told. My companions, knowing I was a writer, started suggesting all kinds of stories I might write. From that first wonderful moment I knew Union Station could weave a spell into my heart and imagination. I just wasn’t sure what that story would be, so I waited for the place to speak to me over the next few visits. Between a few ghosts, some say inhabit the place, the rockin’ light show and romantic vibe which swallowed me whole, the words began to form, much like a baby in a mother’s womb.

                                                     Above Photo Inside Union Station.
People wanted me to write a murder mystery. When I thought about those kind of scenarios, nothing much happened. Then one day my husband came home with a very interesting story he’d heard on NPR. This alone caught my attention because most of the time he is listening to 60’s or 70’s music which makes me crazy.

This story involved Giuseppe Tartini who wrote his most famous work titled The Devil’s Trill. As the story goes the devil visited him one night and played the music on his violin. The following morning Tartini wrote those notes down. This one piece of music is what changed the direction of his career.

My husband loved the story so much he said, “You know, you should use that in one of your books.” That was like throwing gas on a fire for me. My brain went into overdrive.

I packed my bags and headed to St. Louis for a few days. And yes! I stayed at Union Station for inspiration. The staff took good care of me and offered helpful ideas and even gave me a behind the scenes tour of how such a big hotel works. It really helped seeing the places my character could hide from the world.

You never know how your surroundings can affect you. Take advantage of that uncomfortable feeling or the whisper in your ear that says, “write me.” It could be an angel. ~ Tierney James.

Instead of telling you about my book here today, I've decided to do something different. I'd like to tell you about some books I've read that I really enjoyed. Some are written by fellow #RRBC members. Others aren't, but they all share one thing in common. They're worth your time. At least, that is my opinion. They're all available for sale on amazon and other on-line retailers. Here they are in no particular order. Normally this wouldn't be such an easy feat, but I just put down the books that came to mind and the results were:

*AUTHOR JANELLE JALBERT:

I give this memoir 5 out of 5 stars.

Synopsis: Angels do indeed come in fur suits. It’s love at first sight...for both of them. An abandoned yet tenacious pup with one blue eye and one brown eye beats the odds and is enlisted as one woman’s WINGDOG. It's a role he takes seriously, but he knows that his human needs more than just another set of eyes and ears. He must show her how to laugh and how to love again. His loyalty knows no bounds, and he takes his duties seriously riding shotgun as the pair travel life’s highway. A dog may be man’s best friend, but the truth is…A WINGDOG is truly a woman’s gift. For readers who enjoy contemporary canine classics such as MARLEY & ME, THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN, and A DOG’S PURPOSE, Janelle Jalbert’s ‘Magical Mutt Memoir’ combines the best of these storytelling traditions.

Diary of An Airedale

"Author P.J. Erickson:"

I give this memoir 5 out of 5 stars!

Synopsis: Diary of an Airedale will provide some valuable advice on raising the new addition to your family, as well as a few interesting dog facts and lots of chuckles. As dog folk know, their canine friends are really people in fur coats. They think, feel, talk, work and play, and Airedales are renowned for their sense of humor. In short, they are a lot like us. Writing this book was a lot of fun for me. I hope reading it will be for you too.

Shadows At Sunset

Author Tonya Royston

But the boy's disappearance is only the beginning.
